Health & Safety

Update from Safety Officer Wade:

Hello,

We had two incidents this month, both from complications with traversing uneven ground.

IR and Investigation_2026.06.14.FA.Ankle. Stewart. RTW 14Jun2026

IR and Investigation_2026.06.26 FA. Knee. Ni Ti Mountain. RTW

Both individuals have returned to work with one on administrative duties.

It sounds and feels strange to suggest how people should walk because we have done it for so many years and we all do it a bit different from the next person BUT here are a couple helpful reminders that may help each of us to reduce the risk of the #1 injury workplace injury in BC, slip/trip/fall by:

-adjusting your stride to a pace that is suitable for the walking surface and the tasks you are doing /

-walking with the feet pointed slightly outward/

-making wide turns at corners

-using a flashlight if walking in low light conditions /

-making sure that things you are carrying or pushing do not prevent you from seeing any obstructions, spills, etc.

-Pay due care and attention when walking from one location to another.

-Plan your route. Assess the terrain in advance of the work and on an ongoing basis to minimize the risk of slips, trips and falls.

-Ensure you are properly rested and hydrated.

-Locate and use hand holds when moving through challenging terrain

-Communicate the location of any hazards on the route to your field partner/ team.

Halfway River First Nation Mineral Lick Study

In June, the EcoLogic team joined Dr. Roy Rea from the University of Northern British Columbia and two of his graduate students to install upgraded wildlife cameras at mineral licks around the Halfway River First Nation (Halfway) community. The new equipment will help standardize data collection in support of PhD candidate Beatrice Penco's research while building on Halfway's long-standing Indigenous-led wildlife monitoring program.

Zoe writes -

Throughout the fieldwork, Roslyn Notseta, Lands Manager for Halfway River First Nation, generously shared Traditional Knowledge about seasonal wild foods, medicinal plants, and the cultural significance of the landscape. This collaborative partnership continues to grow as we head into our third year. This season also brought an exciting discovery of a previously undocumented mineral lick along the Kobes Creek Forest Service Road. We quickly leapt into action to install cameras and have begun monitoring for wildlife use.

It's been rewarding to see how First Nations, consultants and academia can work together to deepen our understanding of these critical wildlife features while trying to support their long-term conservation.

North American Caribou Workshop

Lauren writes -

I got to attend the North American Caribou Workshop from June 14-19th in Yellowknife. The theme of the event was “United by Caribou” and brought together a diverse range of people to share their knowledge and experiences of caribou stewardship. I really loved how the conference wasn’t just about attending talks (though the talks were great!) but also participating in community activities hosted by the Yellowknives Dene and Tłı̨chǫ communities. A big highlight for me was participating in events where I got to try hide preparation, caribou hair tufting (much harder than it looks), and try caribou meat for the first time (pretty good!). It was an amazing way to foster a deeper connection to the animals, and understand how vital community based stewardship is.

PulsePoint AED App

Katherine wanted to share the PulsePoint AED App, which is a great resource you can use to locate the closest AED units to you in case of an emergency. For example, here are the closest AEDs to the Burnaby, Lillooet, and Prince George offices

Celebrating Summer!

Similkameen Fungi & Feast Regional Foray

This month, our own Zoe McDonell headed to Manning Park where NAMA (North American Mycological Association) hosted the Similkameen Fungi & Feast Regional Foray. While the focus was undoubtedly on locating and cooking fire morels, several of us diehards headed out for two days of mycological biodiversity surveys. The event wrapped with a multi-course fungi feast headed up by Canada’s Top Chef winner Paul Moran. It was a great week and an amazing opportunity to spend time in the field with fungi legends such as Andy MacKinnon and Paul Kroeger.

Rumours abound that the VMS (Vancouver Mycological Society) will be announcing dates imminently for their October Manning Park foray. Please let Zoe know if you’re interested and maybe we can get some EcoLogic presence going. It’s a great opportunity to learn your fall mushrooms and make some field friends.

Birding with Michael

Michael shared some highlights from his recent birding excursions.

Final query

Katherine would like to know if anyone has a Bokashi composter setup they absolutely love??
